A walk round Hunstanton - The Green
The Green is the centre of Hunstanton, and stands between the quiet tranquility of the residential area to the north and the more tourist-oriented south of the town. This is where Hunstanton St. Edmund began, since the first building in the new town was the New Inn, now the Golden Lion (though at the time it was called "LeStrange's folly" after the town's founder, Henry LeStrange, because it was the only building for miles around).

The Golden Lion sits to the north of the green, with the Town Hall on the right of the photograph. The Tourist Information Centre is in the ground floor of the Town Hall building. This year there is a mown maze in the middle of the green. The floral display is planted to celebrate the Scouting movement's centenary.
The Princess Theatre, which faces the Golden Lion across the green, is a modern theatre that hosts plays, live entertainments of all kinds, films and (over the Christmas season) an excellent traditional pantomime.

The origins of this shaft, the upright of a medieval cross, are obscure. Although there are stories that it was part of an old church in Snettisham, the most likely origin is Old Hunstanton.
The old pier-head burned down in 2002. The new replacement is more in keeping with the atmosphere of the green.

At the south end of the green, near to the shore, there is a bandstand which hosts performances by local bands and groups during the summer season.

From the Green, for a shorter walk, walk north to the left of the Golden Lion to get to the gardens and the squares or to the left of the Princess Theatre along St Edmund's Terrace to the bus station and union church. Otherwise walk past the bandstand, down to the South Promenade and on to the Pleasure Beach.
